When to visit: July to October, avoid rainy seasons of December to February.
Diving the waters of the Strait
While visibility is frequently poor due to the easily stirred black volcanic sand that carpets the Strait, the Lembeh Strait is an extremely popular spot with marine life watchers, underwater photography enthusiasts and any diver looking to see something out of the ordinary.
Unusual beauty abounds
Best seen during the dry season of July to October when the surface is calm and the water temperature a slightly lower 77-79°F (25-26°C), the Lembeh Straits should be on every diver’s bucket list. While it lacks the majestic rays and whales of other parts of Indonesia, it more than makes up for it with some of the more unusual sea life you’re likely to ever see, including several native species of sea slug.
For those keen on coral, the Strait boasts a number of impressive reefs surrounded by pristine white sands, but the key attraction here is muck diving. With aptly named spots like Hairball a common sight on every itinerary, it’s arguably one of the best spots in the world to see some out of the ordinary sea creatures. On every undersea photographer’s list is the mimic octopus, the flamboyant cuttlefish, the harlequin shrimp and the highly entertaining hairy frogfish. The truly lucky might run into the Lembeh Sea Dragon, a recently discovered and highly colourful piece of marine life. On night dives, keep an eye out for stargazers hiding in the sands and Spanish dancers passing by in the darkness.
